Department of Tectonics and Geological Mapping
The Department of Tectonics and Geological Mapping conducts research on:
- tectonics of fold-and-thrust belts and fold belts,
- strike-slip faulting and strike-slip fault associated structures as e.g.: extensional and contractional step-overs, tectonic blocks that rotate around the vertical axis, contraction basins as structures controlled by tranpressional faulting and their geomechanical conditions,
- active tectonics related to faults and their connection with the distribution of earthquakes,
- assessment of the tectonic stability of the basement and fault activity carried out for the location of nuclear power plants in Poland,
- threats related to mass superficial movements,
- development of the fracture and fault patterns, their role in the process of folding and faulting,
- structural analysis and geological mapping carried out to solve structural problems,
- analysis of structures induced by the laboratory mechanical testing.
The research is carried out on the basis of a number of methods including field and laboratory work, macro- and microstructural analysis, analysis of seismic and well-log data integrated with the results of tests of rock strength.
Employees use modern technologies, including Schlumberger software, such as Petrel, TechLog, PetroMod, Poly 3D, enabling the preparation of advanced 2D and 3D models. Research is conducted both in Poland and in the world, incl. Denmark, Iran and New Zealand. Employees form research teams including scientists specialized in various fields of geology, that allows for the analysis of tectonic issues in a broad geological spectrum.
This approach allows students (BSc, MSc and PhD) to undertake various topics of their diploma theses and develop skills in observations, data collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation as well as individual and team working valued on the contemporary labour market.
